SWEET PUPPY TRADED FOR FOOD – REIKI withTWEETLES LOVE

Your gift of $51 – or whatever you can spare – will help feed and care for animals like Mixer and his kitten friends

Dear Eyla,

Our Pet Rescue team in Johannesburg has come across some desperate situations through the years. But this one stunned even them.

In Africa, AIDS is at epidemic proportions. Sadly, there are many children left as orphans when their parents pass away from the awful disease.

At an AIDS hospice near to IFAW’s veterinary clinic, people suffering from AIDS receive emotional and financial support for themselves and their families. Many of the needy are mothers with young children.

It was to this AIDS clinic that a desperately hungry woman arrived with a sweet puppy named Mixer. She was so desperate to feed her family, in fact, that she came to the clinic to trade their beloved puppy for food for her children.

The hospice, of course, gave assistance to her and her family. And they took in Mixer – not as payment for the food, but because they didn’t want Mixer to be a burden on the struggling family.

The hospice then called IFAW, and we immediately fetched Mixer and brought him back to our veterinary clinic.

Mixer is such a sweet puppy – and he has taken quite a liking to a litter of kittens also at the clinic. He curls up and sleeps with them and gently plays with them.

It’s heartbreaking to think of the struggle that so many families dealing with AIDS face every day. The work of the AIDS hospice and other human-aid charities is so needed.

Of course, the pets of these families, and many other animals in these impoverished communities, also face great hardship and desperately need help. And that’s where we come in.

Without us – without me and you – animals like Mixer and his kitten friends may have little chance for survival. They’d likely end up on the street with no food, and they’d quickly face starvation. And they’d be easy targets for painful infections like mange, heartworm, and the many other diseases that afflict street dogs. Even if they did survive, they’d likely live a life of great suffering.

But thanks to IFAW’s clinic, and the support from animal lovers like you, Mixer and his kitten friends are now safe. And they have the opportunity to find loving new homes, free from the threat of starvation and painful diseases.

Eyla, you can make a real difference in the lives of animals like Mixer – a lifesaving difference.

Please make a donation today to help IFAW rescue animals, care for them, and find them new homes.

For a gift of $51, you can help rescue a puppy like Mixer, provide them with the full balance of medicines they may need for the most common infections, and feed them for their entire first week at the shelter.

I know that times are tough, and that $51 is a lot to ask. But please know that – for whatever amount you can spare – your generosity will mean so much to suffering animals.

Your donation can truly be the gift of life for puppies like Mixer, for the kittens he curls up with, and for animals around the world who would face such suffering without your help.

Please say you’ll be a hero to Mixer – and to animals who have nowhere else to turn – by giving today.

The animals desperately need us…and your gift will help so much.

PS. In impoverished communities like Mixer’s, often the human and animal aid agencies work together for the good of suffering people and animals. So your gift of $51 – or whatever you can spare – will directly help animals, and will also have a positive and lasting effect in many disadvantaged communities.

What’s In YOUR Cat’s Bowl?

According to Margaret Gates of the Feline Nutrition Education Society, “Having a cat is having a connection to the wild. We get to caress the tiger. Now we want people to think of that connection in more literal terms. Cats may act domesticated, but living with humans has changed them very little physically. Your cat is still wild in almost every way. This is especially true when it comes to what they should be eating.
As we get out the message about bio-appropriate diets for cats, membership becomes vital to our effort. Having lots of members gives weight to our advocacy efforts. Basically, we are looking to get people thinking “How can all those people be wrong? There must be something to this.” Getting our message to them is important, but we’re still preaching to the choir. There aremillions of cats out there being fed badly, and suffering for it. Help us reach those people by getting new members for the Society. It’s free.”

Big Cat Rescue ITunes App – REIKI withTWEETLES LOVE

Big Cat AppHey Tampa, Lisa with Parner Pulse here with an update on one of our more unique Tampa Florida Attractions.

Big Cat Rescue has just released their very own iTunes App. The Big Cat app features instant access to the hundreds of amazing animals at the Big Cat sanctuary right here in Tampa.

With the App you will get photos of lions, tigers, leopards, bobcats, servals and many other unique cats that you may not have known existed! It will of course have tons of images (all of which I’m sure are amazing), that you can use for backgrounds on your phone or even share with friends.

The app only costs $1.99 and majority of that goes to Big Cat Rescues sanctuary. This app also gives you a chance to keep up with the advocacy campaigns Big Cat Rescue is part of, and help spread the word about what they do.

Big Cat Rescue is a hidden gem in Tampa, and if you have a free afternoon it is completely worth it to stop by. I have been and LOVED every second. The animals are beautiful, and the staff is amazing. I learned a lot about the Big Cats here in Florida and all across the United States.

Help support Big Cat Rescue and purchase their app today! (Droid users, they are working on one for you too!)

That’s all for now, but I’ll be sure to keep you posted on Tampa Florida News, and other great Thing To Do In Tampa Bay!

5 Servals Kept in Basement for 12 Years – Big Cat Rescue – REIKI withTWEETLES LOVE

5 Servals Kept in Basement for 12 Years

Back in the 1990s it was legal to own Servals, a Cheetah like cat who is built for speed and can leap 12 up in pursuit of birds, as pets. Thanks to those who have spoken out to protect exotic cats, it is no longer legal, but anyone who had such cats prior to the ban were allowed to keep them until they died of old age. Chris bought five cute little serval kittens from the now defunct Latham pet store and took them home with the intentions of providing them with life long care. She loved her pets, but quickly learned that they would escape at every oportunity of an open door and that servals are built to spray urine all over everything to mark it as their own.

Before long the five servals, Zoul, Zimbal, Zoulexxa, Santino, and one who has since died, were relegated to the basement, where a drain had been installed in the floor to facilitiate cleaning. Another serval, Doodles, became an unwanted housepet of a man in FL and joined the cat clan in NY. They were to spend more than 12 years in the basement, eating a canned diet called ZuPreem and shredding newspaper for fun. Chris tried to alliviate their boredom with pumpkins for Halloween, eggs for Easter and Christmas trees as enrichment, but they perilously fat for their slender legs due to the small size of their enclosure, which was only 12 feet wide and 25 feet long.

When Chris began battling cancer her home went into foreclosure. Her sister ran off and left her three children behind and Chris was the one to step in to rescue them. Knowing that she is about to be forced out of her home, with three more kids in tow, she knew that she would never be able to rent an apartment if she were to keep her five declawed servals. Having no Internet connection she enlisted the help of her friend Vicki to try and find a sanctuary for her beloved pets. As you can imagine, there was no place that could take in five more hungry mouths to feed with the economy being what it is. It was looking like her only alternative would be to put the cats to sleep and just the thought of it was almost more than Chris could bear.

Thanks to all of our wonderful supporters, Big Cat Rescue can help these five servals. We can join two of our existing 1,200 sf cages and add a room addition so that these cats will have appx. 3,000+ sf of space. From end to end they will be able to run and chase each other, lizards and butterflies for about 200 feet at a time. They will be able to feel the soft earth beneath their feet and roll in the grass for the first time ever. They will awaken to birds singing in the trees over head, feel the breeze on their faces and go to sleep under the stars with crickets singing their lullabies. Most importantly, they will never be in want again of a place to call home. We can make this happen, but we need your help. For a limited time, thanks to a wonderful donor, your donation can be matched here:
